Many people who join a membership club and think they are saving a lot of money.
But are they really?
Here is a little bit of background on warehouse clubs. They first opened in the 1970’s. They offered a limited selection of value-priced food and nonfood products, mostly in large package sizes. The original target market was small to medium sized businesses, offering a cost savings to those businesses. (Source: https://www.bluebookservices.com/club-stores-the-market-leaders/)
I don’t shop at warehouse or club stores for the following reasons:
1) Time: Up until 2022 the closest warehouse type store was 30-45 miles from my home.
2) Annual membership fee
3) Space to store bulk items
4) Temptation to purchase items I don’t need
5) Processed foods vs. whole fresh foods
When I go into client’s homes I can tell who shops at warehouse type stores by the bulk items they have in their homes. Many times when we are organizing their possessions we will come across out of date items that the client has purchased in bulk. The items are no longer good and they end up in the trash. Other times, clients move to a smaller home and have less storage space.
Given all of these reasons, when your membership comes up for renewal consider if you really are saving money. Not renewing might actually save you dollars and time.
Our membership is mainly used for fresh consumables, like fruit, veggies, meats, and the rotisserie chicken. 😊
