One way a person can leave a legacy is through recipes.
Perhaps they are known for a special dish or dessert.
In our family, my maternal grandma is remembered for her German Potato Salad, Date Filled Cookies and the various pies she made for Thanksgiving. My Aunt Be for her cornbread stuffing she made at Thanksgiving that is still a family favorite.
Almost forty years ago I met Louise at a weekly Bible study. Louise was about 85 years old. While we were visiting, she revealed that in her family she was well known for delicious apple butter. Her family had come to expect apple butter from her each Christmas. She told our Bible study group that the process of making the apple butter was more than she could handle at her age. So for Christmas that year her family would be receiving her last batch of apple butter and the recipe!!
One of my dear friends Sandy used recipes to honor one of her older brothers. This brother was a loving, full of fun person who enjoyed his food. To honor him she asked friends and family to send her one of their favorite recipes that she would make into a small cookbook. She called the cookbook, “What are you having for supper?” a phrase her brother used often.
Is there a favorite recipe that has been passed down through your family?
Is there a signature recipe that you are known for?
Continue the tradition, show another family member how to prepare the dish and pass along the recipe!
Bon Appetit!
